Ni Hao eCourse

...for the iPad

The Ni Hao eCourse is available from the Apple App Store. The course is designed for students who have no prior knowledge of the Chinese language and combines the Ni Hao Textbook, Ni Hao Student Workbook and Ni Hao Games and brings them to life in one, easy to use App complete with interactive functions to enhance the learning experience.

Ni Hao 1 teaches students basic greetings and introductions and equips them to talk about their family, pets, friends, sport and food.

Ni Hao 2 has a stronger focus on important sentence structures and the language introduced is more frequently and functionally repeated.

Features the language to be learnt in an interactive format. The eCourse content is the same as in the hard copy Textbook making it great for schools currently using the 你好 Nǐ Hǎo Series and looking for an easy switch to the electronic form. Each lesson includes the following subsections:

The eCourse Student Workbook:

Consists of a variety of tasks and activities for students to complete in class or as homework. Each lesson contains:

E-exercises:

These consist of exercises to be completed on the iPad. Students use the iPad’s Pinyin or Handwriting input systems to write Chinese. Results are saved in the student’s profile and can be emailed or printed for the teacher. Handwritten exercises: These include individual and classroom-based activities to be printed and completed by hand. There are more than many pages of handwritten exercises which give students the opportunity to practise character writing and sentence structure, express their opinions and interpretations and be creative in their responses. Particularly designed for school owned devices, all results can be deleted for the start of a new school year.

The eCourse Games:

Contains five different games which reinforce the new characters and phrases learnt. Results are saved in the student’s profile and can be emailed or printed for the teacher.

The Games are designed to reinforce the language learnt in the Textbook in a fun and engaging way. Gold coins are awarded for correct answers and a Yuanbao, or gold ingot, is awarded for every 10 gold coins. Final scores are your coins and yuanbao as a percentage out of the total possible.

• Expressions

  Expressions reinforces the words and expressions learnt.

  Instructions: Choose a correct answer from the four choices that matches the situation in the cartoon, then drag and drop it onto the cartoon. If your chosen answer is incorrect, you will have a second chance to choose the correct answer. Score: 2 coins are awarded for each question answered correctly the first time. 1 coin is awarded for questions answered correctly the second time.

• Memory

  Memory reinforces the vocabulary learnt in the lesson.

  Instructions: Tap the button to begin. All cards are displayed face down. Touch two cards to turn them over and if they match they will be removed from the game. Continue to match cards until none remain or the timer runs out. Score: 2 coins are awarded for each match.

• Construction

  Construction reinforces the components of words and sentence patterns.

  Instructions: Listen to the sentence spoken, then drag and drop each correct character to the corresponding position in the blank squares to construct the sentence. Wait for the square to turn red when dropping the character. The audio can be played as many times as needed. Once you have constructed the sentence, tap "check answer". If you made any errors, you will have a second chance to make any corrections by dragging the incorrect characters back and replacing them. Score: 2 coins are awarded for each question answered correctly the first time. 1 coin is awarded for questions answered correctly the second time.

• Mahjong

  Mahjong reinforces students’ recognition of characters and their structure.

  Instructions: Tap the button to begin. Touch two matching characters which have at least one edge free to remove them from the game. Continue to match characters until none remain or the timer runs out. Score: 2 coins are awarded for each match. 1 coin is deducted for each incorrect match.

• Quick Pick

  Quick Pick reinforces students’ recognition of characters and their structure.

  Instructions: Touch the character on the screen to begin. Touch to catch all five copies of that character flying around the screen within the time limit. Similar looking characters will act as distractions. Score: 2 coins are awarded for each correct catch of the character. 1 coin is deducted for each incorrect touch.
