The Ni Hao student textbooks

The textbook features the language to be learnt. The language is structured, accumulative and reinforced. Each lesson in the Ni Hao 1 to Ni Hao 3 textbooks includes the following subsections:

Illustrated conversation:
This section contains the main text. The conversation in each lesson centres on a topic and is based on a real life situation with a few scenes or settings. Each is illustrated with sequential pictures to assist in the interpretation of the conversation. The language introduced is in a spiral structure with one or two new sentence structures in each scene or setting.

Learn the sentences:
This section provides grammatical explanations of sentence patterns introduced in the main text. The explanations are simple and illustrated with examples. Conversational style is employed rather than pattern drill so as to allow students hold conversations with a partner.

New words and expressions:
This section explains new words and expressions appearing in the main text and occasionally in the "Learn the sentences" section.

Write the characters:
Students will learn to write a certain number of characters in each lesson. This section displays characters with stroke order. These characters are also included in the "Writing exercise" section in the student workbook for students to practise writing.

Something to know:
This section introduces the culture in a way which is related to the content of the lesson. It aims to enrich the student's cultural understanding and to further generate interest in learning the language. The additional sentences or phrases introduced in this section are culturally related. It is up to the teacher whether or not they are to be learnt.
